TOTAL THYROIDECTOMY IN A CASE OF FOLLICULAR CELL CARCINOMA BY DR PRASAD U KASBEKAR

Case of a 52 year old male, with a history of a long standing goitre, since 4 years. Now complaining of a sudden increase in size since 2 months. A total thyroidectomy was done for the patient. Patient was discharged on the 3rd post operative day. His calcium levels and voice quality were normal post surgery suggesting a successful operation. The histopathology came to be follicular carcinoma of thyroid.

Interesting facts about the case were the complexity associated with it. The thyroid gland has grown to an enormous size of 12 by 10 by 6 cm and weighed 458 gms. There was retrosternal extension of the tumour as well as mild adhesion with the left internal carotid artery.
